Flos was founded in 1962 in Merano, to develop new lighting concepts, and the first Flos retail store opened in Milan in 1968.
Flos is an international organization that offers a complete range of residential, commercial and even custom-made lighting products that can be seamlessly integrated in an office, hotel, or a store.
Flos assists architects with the know-how it has acquired over its forty years of experience not only as a manufacturer, but also as a specialty lighting systems designer for a wide-range of challenging environments, such as museums, stores, and theatres.
Recently Flos’ top brass was in India to meet with designers and the trade. On this occasion, we got a chance to interact with their Commercial & Marketing Director Marco Piscitelli. Marco Piscitelli shared details about Flos’ plans to establish itself in India. Here are some of the excerpts from the conversation:
Could you elaborate on Flos’ history in India?
The Flos history in India is a very young one. And that is a good fact: if we look at the results we have had till today and if we analyze the potential of the market, we have just to be extremely motivated in promoting and investing more and more here. After a positive and productive cooperation with a pretty well considered Indian distributor based in Delhi, we have decided, at the end of 2011, a few other select dealers, based in different regions of the country, to establish a direct relationship with Flos. The aim is to be visible and reachable in an easier way to both the main categories of clients: the end user and the professional (architect, interior decorator, lighting designer), providing not only the best designed and performing products but possibly the best service too.
What has been the response to Flos products in India and how do you see its future in the Indian market?
There has always been an enthusiastic response every time Flos have introduced a new product in India. I do confirm there is a lot of appreciation for the Italian design in general and in specific for the Flos designers. Let me remind that talented people like the Castiglioni brothers, Philipe Starck, Jasper Morrison, Antonio Citterio, Marcel Wanders, Piero Lissoni, Patricia Urquiola, and many others have designed and are designing amazing products exclusively for Flos, and this is something that not only makes us enormously proud but that strongly contributes to our notoriety and our success worldwide. Of course in India too. Moreover the Indian architects and designers communities are one of the most sensitive to the application of the new technologies as to the “green and ecological” aspects, therefore, especially referring to the last releases; we are even registering a more increasing interest and enthusiasm about Flos. The future then is bright. A pulsating reality related to the project market and to the contract business, and, at the same time, an enormous potential (even if still a bit young) about the consumer market.
Could you elaborate on the focus of your marketing and distribution?
I have to say Flos is not strictly a marketing oriented company. Therefore our marketing activities are basically pretty instinctive. We are good in doing nice products and we try to display this concept the best we can. In the magazines, with clear and essential contents, and to the point of sale, with a recognizable corner or shop in shop where it’s easier, for the consumer client, to find what he is really looking for. The distribution, as said before, has to be coherent with that. So, few selected partners, based in the major cities, displaying in the proper way, the best of Flos.
Which are some of the best loved FLOS lighting solutions by the Indians?
I would say many. From the very iconic ones, like Arco, Taccia and Stylos (Castiglioni) to the very decorated ones like Skygarden and CanCan (Wanders) or to the super trendy Glo-Ball (Morrison) and KTribe (Starck), till the most technologically advanced ones like Kelvin LED (Citterio) and D’E-Light.
When can we see a flagship FLOS showroom in India?
It depends on few aspects, first the right chance, and second the right feeling at the right time. Anyway, watch out…Flos likes to surprise!
