Ideate, Network, Enterprise, Collaborate –The Dutch Way

Dutch Design Fashion Architecture (DutchDFA), an initiative by The Netherlands, aims to strengthen the international position of Dutch design through strategic cultural exchanges and collaborations.
By Sulaika  D’souza.
A four year programme (2009-2012), DutchDFA has integrated themselves with four focus countries, namely China, India, Germany and Turkey. Along with building long lasting international partnerships, this inventive programme relates to topical issues and local demands in addition to addressing relevant global issues through the medium of design.
As a multi-disciplinary approach to the promotion and the internationalism of Dutch architecture, design and fashion, DutchDFA functions amid a world in constant flux. Proven experts in the field of design, the innovative drive of Dutch designers place them in a position to make essential contributions to the vital process of creative design. Be it developing innovative products and fashionable designs to inventively planning an entire city; by combining forces with local talents through varying disciplines in design, DutchDFA looks to enhance the idea of what makes and is Dutch design.
Research, visitor programmes, missions and matchmaking, travelling exhibitions, education projects, incubators and design consultants, along with partnerships and networks are some instruments through which DutchDFA plan on achieving their set long term goals.
The DutchDFA India chapter explores the possibilities of building strong networks with Indian designers, educational institutions and design organisations. 2010 issued Mapping India – An insider’s guide to Indian architecture, design and fashion – commissioned by DutchDFA in collaboration with three talents in Anand Patel, Hrridaysh Despande and Harmeet Bajaj respectively.
The Dutch have also got the ball rolling on designer exchange programmes with Fashion India – Holland: Tradition and Innovation; where six young Dutch fashion designers from Amsterdam Fashion Institute collaborated with Pearl Academy of Fashion in Delhi. After spending six months absorbing Indian culture, fashion and politics, the students will incorporate their newly found knowledge into a sustainable fashion collection inspired by both Dutch and Indian cultures. The second part of the programme has four Indian fashion design students visit Amsterdam from February up until July 2011.2011 issued the sail of travelling exhibition Connecting Concepts. A collection of singularly Dutch Designs the exhibition transpires a profound understanding of Dutch culture and design. Yet another initiative is ‘Delhi 2050’ an open research process to develop three different visions for the burgeoning capital metropolis forty years into the future. The formulation of these three model visions aim to facilitate debate, discussion, comparison, solutions, internal meetings, in addition to insightful conversations. A long term future development idea, Delhi 2050 fits the bill as one of the most interesting approaches to city planning.
By 2012, Dutch DFA will have achieved the spread of idea – specifically characteristic Dutch design seen and recognised as answers to local issues in the focus countries. Development of sustainable networks between The Netherlands and the select focus countries. Build an enterprise with lower thresholds to local markets, with a higher turnover and stronger international entrepreneurship in the Dutch design field. In addition to sustainable as well as cross-sector collaborations to further internationalisation of Dutch design. Through these interlinked principles the programme is certain to add maximum value to all countries and designers involved.
A unique collaboration between public and private partners, DutchDFA is a collaborative effort of Premsela (the Dutch Platform for Design and Fashion), The Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI), The Association of Dutch Designers (BNO), Royal Institute of Dutch Architects (BNA), The Association of Dutch Interior Architects (BNI), and MODINT (trade association for fashion, interior design, carpets and textiles) and is funded by the Ministries of Education, Culture and Science (OCW), Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation (EL&I) and Foreign Affairs (BZ).
