Lighting solutions for living spaces have transcended mere elementary and aesthetic functionalities. Italian ergo fabulous, Flos, over decades now has joined forces with creative designers across the globe to bring superb lighting solutions to accentuate affluent spaces. By Debolina Sengupta
Brilliance of technology has brought clean tight living spaces available in step with elegant designs. Less is more. Minimal is now the principal to finer living. Riding at the head of the pack of leading designer lighting solutions manufacturers is Flos.
Function and aesthetics are beautifully melded in each and every product that carries this exclusive label. Basic devices are now enhanced by applications; bringing technology closer to the light is Philippe Starck in his NET lamp design for Flos. Perfect for any modern setting, the lamp doubles as a USB dock and can be used with an iPad, iPod as well as an iPhone. “Globe-trotting clientele, always in the hunt for designer portfolio have really appreciated the onset of Flos in India. Thus, growth is quiet substantial and so it would be in the future,” believes Amanpreet Singh, Country Manager of Flos.
Along with Strack’s contemporary creation, Flos brought together a collection of innovative and chic designs to showcase at the Euroluce 2011, Milan, Italy.
Beaker: Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby fashioned Beaker. Not only simple and understated, this cone light makes a perfect accessory for any ambient. The Beaker is made of ceramic and is minimalist to say the least. The design is such that the Beaker diffuses light from all sides and ensures illuminated spaces with an understated, uniform light. Of simple design, the beaker is available in both large and small versions with a power LED light source.
Aim: The basic idea behind this creation by the Bouroullec brothers was to actualise a universal design, something easily adjustable and flexible to suit any need. This lamp arrangement is minimalist, simple, downright elemental, chic, and perfect for any surrounding. Inspired by nature, the wires that suspend individual lamps mirror tree branches, adding a playful element to the design. Aim allows easy arrangement of incident light, creating befitting temperatures and tones to suit mood.Biblioteque Nationale: Philippe Starck’s fairy tale creation looks like books taking flight towards the light source. Perfect for any contemporary setting, this lamp showcases the need for multifunctional light solutions in residential and office environments. Incorporated with an USB connector, the lamp can also be used to recharge smartphones as well. “Design for Flos has always meant simplicity and functionality. As a direct consequence of that, the real sense of innovation for Flos always refers to a practical use of a design’s item. A USB port is clear, up-to-date proof of that,” says Singh.Flos has a lot more to offer people with varying design needs. The other designs offered by the company are equally attractive. There is a lamp for the likes of any environment. Colour aficionados would appreciate the Piani lamp, while eco-friendly folk can light up spaces with an easy conscience in the Kelvin LED green mode by Antonio Citterio. “The price sensitive Indian consumer has now become design sensitive and the potential growth of the Indian economy has raised the numbers of these affluent design conscious beings here. And since the desire for design is human and not a monopoly of a niche, thus the growth is substantial in all cities big or small,” shares Singh.
